Resources to connect with a counselor

If you are looking for a counselor and you are not experiencing a crisis, the following resources may be helpful:

Psychology Today: Searchable database of local providers, areas of specialization and other information.

Find a Counselor: A service of the Licensed Professional Counselor Association of North Carolina.

Pro Bono Counseling Network, a project of Mental Health America of the Triangle providing free short-term counseling (up to 8 sessions), available to North Carolina residents who live in Durham, Orange, Person and Chatham counties: 919.942.8083. If you live outside one of these four counties, you may contact Mental Health America and search for a MHA affiliate near you.

Insurance companies all have provider listings that reflect who is in-network with their various plans. Please note that these plans are often not updated accurately with whether providers are taking new clients.

Compass Center for Women and Families
Services to support women and families to prevent domestic violence. Legal, therapeutic and crisis aid and more. Located in Chapel Hill.

Chatham Family Violence Prevention Services (CFVPS) County advocates provide services for domestic violence victims and their family. Services include assistance with domestic violence protective orders, community referrals, developing safety plans, and help securing transportation or emergency housing. Services are confidential and the trained advocates are fluent in English and Spanish. 45 W Salisbury St in Pittsboro. Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC) is the sole provider of comprehensive shelter and support services to survivors of domestic, sexual and family violence and human trafficking in the Durham area. DCRC’s continuum of service includes a 24-Hour Help Line; emergency shelter; safety planning; crisis intervention; information and referrals for job training, housing, and childcare; counseling referral and support groups; legal advocacy; assistance with filing for victim compensation; hospital accompaniment; community education and outreach. All of DCRC’s services are confidential, free and offered in English and Spanish. DCRC also offers educational workshops and professional training for service providers, law enforcement, hospitals, faith-based organizations, schools, civic groups, and other community members.

National Alliance on Mental Illness, North Carolina Chapter (NAMI NC) Membership consists of family members of people who live with mental illness, individuals who live with mental illness, friends, and professionals and local free support resources are provided.

Triangle Survivors of Suicide Loss
Helps families and friends deal with the intense grief in the aftermath of the suicide of a loved one. Local groups and support resources.

Growing Through Grief Growing thru Grief focuses on grief that follows the loss of loved ones, such as a spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild or friend.
